Dear Fitness Friends,

It has been three months since I started back with my raw food lifestyle. I have lost 20 pounds, and am feeling fantastic! I am working at building muscle and trying not to lose weight too quickly.

There is a large community of raw foodists and people who are interested in eating a high-raw diet. If you do a search on the internet, you will find website after website of raw food enthusiasts.

I have been attending many raw food lectures and demonstrations in my immediate community and have seen many of the same people at the various functions. Since there seems to be a growing number of raw foodists here, I have started a raw food group locally. We will have a potluck once a month and meet on a weekly basis.

This is a great way to nurture my own interest and help me share my lifestyle and find a sense of community and make like-minded friends. (I plan on starting a blog, so I won't have to bore you with the details here).

You may not be into eating mainly raw foods, let alone be a vegetarian, but if you find yourself isolated or staying at home too much, I suggest you go to www.MeetUp.com and find groups within your area that you have an interest in attending. This is a great way to get out and be more active and make new friends. The more active we are in our lives, the happier we are, and the less time we dwell on food and eating.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Are You Eating Too Much Sugar?

by Lynne Bode

Cutting sugar from your diet is quite trendy these days. Many dieters even go so far as to proudly proclaim that they have "stopped eating sugar" all together. Well, in reality that probably isn't even possible. They naively think that cutting out cake, cookies and candy means that they are no longer eating sugar.

But, sugar is practically everywhere. Do you know how much you are consuming? If you are a typical American, you may be eating 156 pounds per year! That's how much the USDA says Americans consume each year on a per capita basis. Sure, some of that comes from standard junk food but much of it comes from more "hidden" sources.

To significantly reduce your sugar intake, it's mandatory that you read labels and know where your sugar intake truly comes from. Here are some places where you may be ingesting loads of sugar without even realizing it.

Yogurt: Generally, this is a food that people consider "healthy". However, unless you choose the Plain flavor, you'll be getting a lot of sugar. Check the label and you'll find on average about 20 to 25 grams of sugar in a measly 6 ounces.

Salad Dressings: Salads have always been considered good dieting choices. But, not only can they be laden with fats, but even the healthiest, veggie-packed salads can pack a sugar punch from the dressings that accompany them.

Soft Drinks: Here's where a huge portion of consumer sugar intake is found. Studies show that soft drinks account for as much as 33% of all added sugars consumed. And if you think switching to sugar-free diet drinks is the answer, hold on. The risk of obesity appears to be higher among diet cola drinkers.

Cereal: Here's a food that someone can easily overeat. A serving is often only ¾ cup which means most people tend to have at least two servings at breakfast. Plus, cereal is often eaten as a snack as well, and a few handfuls can quickly add up. Many cereals that tout themselves as being healthy have more sugar in them then a candy bar.

Protein Bars: These small little morsels disguise themselves as being packed with protein and all natural ingredients. However, the huge sugar content diminishes their nutritional value. In some cases, you might actually be better off grabbing a chocolate candy bar.

Low Fat and Fat Free Foods: When fat is eliminated from a food often the flavorful taste disappears too. To prevent a low fat food from being too bland, manufacturers regularly add extra sugar to ensure a good taste. So while the fat grams may be low, there are plenty of calories because of the extra sugar.

Why do you need to watch your sugar intake? Most experts agree that sugar in its pure form is not inherently "bad" for you. The problem with sugar is that it packs a lot of calories per serving. Plus, since foods with sugar in them taste good to most people then we eat larger portions of those foods. Therefore, we consume more calories when we eat high sugar foods.

In 2003, the World Health Organization released guidelines indicating sugar should account for only about 10% of our daily calories, which is roughly only eight teaspoons. Most labels refer to sugar in grams—eight teaspoons is about 37 grams. What does that mean to you? Well, one six ounce yogurt and one cup of many brands of cereal will quickly put you over that recommended limit.

As with most diet recommendations, the key is to keep your consumption in check. Do this by reading labels. If sugar is the first ingredient listed on a food, you probably should consider putting it back on the shelf. And remember that there are many different terms used for sugar. It also is referred to as high fructose corn syrup, glucose, sucrose and other names. Pay extra attention to the foods mentioned in the hidden sugars list above. And, if eating high sugar foods, limit your portion.

Essential Oils and Wellness

by Jann Griffiths, MS, CMT, CR

It has been my honor to share the health supporting properties of 100% therapeutic grade essential oils with my clients during their massage and Reflexology sessions over the past two years. The opportunity to educate my clients so they can manage their personal health challenges, as well as those of their loved ones and maintain their good health, is very important to me. I’d like to share a few things I’ve learned that I think might be beneficial to you as well.

Frankincense, grapefruit, and cypress are wonderful essential oils for breast health as they have anti-tumor properties. One drop of each can be mixed with jojoba oil or a small amount of organic water-based lotion and applied to the breasts daily.

A blend of tangerine, orange, ylang ylang, patchouli and blue tansy, known as Peace and Calming, is wonderful for restless leg syndrome. It can be either inhaled or applied to the bottom of the feet at bedtime for best results. A diffuser is a wonderful way to use this oil and many other oils that work well through inhalation therapy over a prolonged period of time, i.e. overnight.

Cypress is a wonderful essential oil for circulation and vein health. A few drops can be added to a carrier oil, lotion, or cream and gently applied to the legs for varicose veins. It is important not to massage varicose veins vigorously.

Though many essential oils possess anti-inflammatory properties, i.e. bergamot, lavender, and chamomile; peppermint is one of my favorites. One (1) drop of peppermint oil equals 30 cups of peppermint tea. It can be applied topically or ingested in water. I have used it for headaches, hot flashes, and inflammation of joints and muscles. A blend of basil and black pepper is also very good for inflammation accompanied by muscle soreness.

While most essential oils have anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-septic properties, Thieves Blend is my absolute favorite. When taken internally with thyme and oregano oils, it can knock out viruses and bacteria that attack the respiratory system.

In January I had my cholesterol tested and was shocked to find it had increased considerably since my previous test, a year earlier. I promptly started on a liver cleanse using Juva Cleanse, a proprietary blend from Young Living. I started with 3 drops daily and increase to 10 drops over the course of 3 months. I took it internally in a double 00 gel capsule, but it may be applied topically over the liver. I am now using Juva Tone for the next 3 months. I will repeat this 6 month process to conclude a year-long liver cleanse that also helps support liver function. In just 4 months my cholesterol dropped by 40 points. This was a decrease in my LDL and an increase in my HDL

Raindrop Therapy (RDT) was developed by D. Gary Young N.D.; and I use it in my massage therapy practice regularly. I have seen wonderful results for my clients. During Raindrop Therapy 9 essential oils (singles and blends) are applied along the bottoms of the feet and dropped onto the spine. In addition to relaxing the muscles it also releases viruses and pathogens that live in the spinal region.

The three major application methods include topical, inhalation, and ingestion. Above are just a very few uses for essential oils. The Essential Oils Desk Reference is invaluable to me and my clients as we continue to learn additional applications for these precious fluids. I am also fortunate to be associated with a wonderful group of individuals who use essential oil regularly for their personal well being and that of their loved ones and are willing to share their knowledge and experiences freely for the benefit of all.

Do not use inferior essential oils and expect to get the same results that you will with 100% therapeutic grade essential oils from a trusted source. It is important to remember that when using essential oils the top of the bottle should never be touched as it may cause contamination to the contents of the bottle. It is also important to drink plenty of water to flush all of the toxins and pathogens from your body that are released from the tissue with the use of essential oils. If you have any type of unpleasant reaction to an essential oil, i.e. excessive and uncomfortable heat, apply vegetable oil over the area where the essential oil was applied rather than using water, which can accentuate the affect of the oil.
