Dear Fitness Friends,

I am getting ready to go out of town for a family reunion/celebration, so I decided to get this month's issue out early.

I have been faithful to my new lifestyle of raw food and almost daily exercise for the past month or so, and I feel GREAT!

Just because I am currently following a raw food diet, I don't expect everyone to. There are almost as many ways of eating as there are people who eat. It is up to each person to find the diet that works for them.

When I say "diet," I don't mean weight loss diet. I mean the way the person eats. Each person must eat the food that make him (or her) feel healthy, energetic and not carry excess body weight. He (or she) needs to know when to eat and when to quit eating. One has to walk a fine line of eating enough and not eating too much.

And of course, one can always decide to make an exception around the holidays--such as the 4th of July. If you choose to indulge during this holiday, please remember to stay active and get right back to your regular eating plan as soon as possible!

Happy Indepence Day to all my fitness friends,

Three Convincing Reasons To Start
Bodyweight Training Right Now

by Kevin Gianni

Now is the perfect time to start your bodyweight exercise training. Why? Maybe it’s because you are concerned about your overall health. Maybe because you are getting a little older and worried about staying fit and having energy, like you did when you were younger. But whatever is causing your interest in bodyweight exercise now is the time to begin your workout routine. There are three very convincing reasons why now, not later is the perfect time to begin your bodyweight exercise workout. These three reasons are even more convincing why you should not put off your decision to exercise until “whenever.”

All ages and fitness levels can do bodyweight exercises. So, there are no excuses for not beginning your bodyweight exercises now. You can be 18 or 80 and still be able to perform many of these exercises easily and effectively. It doesn’t matter what kind of “shape” you are in; whether a diehard couch potato or a tri-athlete you can perform bodyweight exercises and still be challenged but the variety of exercises available.

Bodyweight exercises build overall endurance, flexibility and strength. Some bodyweight exercises even build all through in just one exercise. What other exercise can make this claim?

Strength is defined as, “the quality or state of being strong; bodily or muscular power, vigor. By utilizing the variety of positions and exercises available all forms of strength are created throughout your body.

Endurance is the ability to use your strength for as long as possible and with bodyweight exercises you create ability for your body to use your strength longer. You build within your muscles, joints and tendons as well as whole body the ability necessary to do more than just have instant bursts of strength, but to have prolonged periods which help you in many daily tasks as well as have more fun participating in sports and other activities.

Flexibility is also known as limber, pliant or adaptable. Bodyweight exercises elongate muscles while creating strength and endurance. The use of stretching exercises or calisthenics teach your body to be able to move in ways more healthy and fun.

Thirdly, you should begin bodyweight exercises now to make the most of the benefits. Bodyweight exercises benefit both your body and mind. They make you healthier both physically and mentally. You will be more physically fit, have more energy and have a better view of life by using bodyweight exercises.

Endorphins are produced when you exercise. These chemicals are naturally produced in your body through this type of activity and increase your energy level, provide you mentally with more positive outlook as well as help you sleep better.

By beginning bodyweight exercises now, you can improve your overall health by becoming more physically fit and reducing your body fat. With the reduction of body fat, your body will appear more attractive and toned. A healthier body and reduction of body fat can also lead to reducing your risks for certain diseases such as heart disease, obesity, stroke, and diabetes. Regular exercise such as bodyweight training also reduces your risk of injury due to other activities and increases your body’s ability to heal from injuries.

No other exercise routine can provide you with these reasons for beginning right now. Many require a certain level of familiarity with exercise, others you need to be young to do. With many other training programs you have to wait to begin, until you purchase the right equipment or schedule a trainer. With bodyweight exercises you build long lasting strength, flexibility and endurance and decrease your risks for disease while increasing your appearance and energy and you can do it right now, no waiting or scheduling is needed. You can start your new exercise routine right this minute and begin a new life full of energy and health.

Eat Like A Monkey For Energy and Relaxation

by Lena Sanchez

Ever watch monkeys? Did you notice their energy level? Also did you notice they truly can relax? Could their diet have something to do with it? Scientists have concluded it does!

First they eat raw fruits and vegetables, with bananas being their favorite. Their favorite food, bananas have three energy boosting natural sugars, sucrose, fructose and glucose and when combined with fiber gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research studies have proven that eating two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. Not the only great thing about bananas though! They do not lose nutritional content after being picked as do other fruits and vegetables with thinner skin!

My grandmother's saying, "If it tastes good it can't be good for you," doesn't hold water with the banana case… Studies have also found that bananas help can overcome and/or prevent a number of illnesses and conditions, making it a great idea to include them in your daily diet.

Here are some tasty ideas to help some common health problems by starting and ending your day eating a banana.

Health Problems Helped are:

1) Anemia: Bananas are high in iron and can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood therefore helping in iron deficiency anemia. No constipation when eating bananas as with iron supplements!

2) Blood Pressure: The doctors' I worked with would tell the patient to eat a banana every day! Why? Because they are high in potassium yet low in salt. That advice was usually to people taking blood pressure medications, since those medications help to deplete the system of that most important mineral potassium. People with low Potassium in the body creates the climate for heart attack and/or other diseases... Doctors in India discovered just two bananas a day can reduce blood pressure by 10% in just one week. This backs up a previous American study showing that eating five bananas a day was 50% as effective as taking prescription medication to reduce hypertension. The US Food and Drug Administration now allows the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.

3) Student Brain Power: A study done with the help of 200 students at a Twickenham England, (Middlesex) school showed; by eating bananas at breakfast, break and lunch boosted their brain power making for better exam results. Research has shown that, again the mineral potassium-packed fruit can further learning by making students more alert.

4) Constipation: Bananas are high in fiber thereby including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, assisting in overcoming constipation without resorting to harsh laxatives.

5) Depression: Bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin known to help you relax, thereby improving mood and helping to create a happier feeling. This was been proven when done with depressed patients.

6) Hangovers: Alcohol depletes the body of several minerals and also dehydrates the body and one of the quickest hangover cures could be eating a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana shake calms the stomach replaces the potassium lost and the milk helps to rehydrate the body while calming the nerves with tryptophan...

7) Heart-burn: Bananas have a natural antacid calming effect in the body. You might try eating a banana next time you suffer from heart-burn, and calm the gas!

8) Morning Sickness: Prevent that morning sickness by snacking on bananas between meals helping to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness. Even if you forget to eat them before and you wake up with morning sickness, eat a banana to calm the stomach!

9) Bone builder: Bananas are high in phosphorus, needed for bone development, calcium, and potassium. They are particularly rich in vitamin C and contain significant amounts of several other vitamins such as vitamin A. Bananas do not contain fat and have zero cholesterol.

19) PMS: Eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels and tryptophan the calming soothing chemical, which can affect your mood.

11) Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronic ulcer cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

12) Fevers: Many cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

13) Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer, tryptophan.

14) Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking, as the high levels of Vitamin C, A1, B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Contrary to popular belief, bananas are not fattening.

Eating tip! The more yellow the fruit the easier to digest and the more nutrients!
