Dear Fitness Friends,

What a wonderful time of the year! Here in south Florida, we finally had a taste of fall weather today! Of course, other places in the United States, there is snow. Snow is nice, too.

No matter what type of weather you have, there are lots of ways you can find to exercise or be active.

It will be Halloween soon. Will you use that as an excuse to over indulge eating candy? I didn't think so. But remember, if your willpower isn't as strong as you would like it, buy small boxes of raisins to give the children who come to your door (they get too much candy already), or buy a type of candy that you don't like.

I wish you all a happy and healthy Halloween and/or Harvest Festival.

Can You Really Find A Healthy
Life Style Without All The Work?

by Layne Stoops

Being healthy, in shape, and taking care for your own body combines to equal fitness. Which is something wonderful that people can do to enhance their lives—commit to fitness!

The Bible describes our body as being our temple, which is why it is so important to maintain it. Staying fit is a noble act.

This will take a lot of effort and action, but there will be an excellent payoff. Only those who work at it are lucky enough to have a life full of peace and happiness.

Fitness exercise is vital to any routine. Fitness exercise helps fight many diseases, some of which are serious enough to kill, like heart disease.

Unfortunately, greater numbers of people tend to pay no attention to this type of activity. This is why so many people are coming down with different ailments. So of course the hospital business is booming, even if it's on the backs of these patients.

In fact, high school students don’t generally follow the recommended activities for fitness and health by the Council of the President on Physical Fitness and the Surgeon General nowadays. This amounts to 33% of the United States population.

More often than not, their disregard to health continues into their adulthood. Since more and more people are not staying fit, there will be even more people with weakened resistance, thus more diseases.

As discovered by the National Institute on Aging, a mere 58 % of Americans are taking part in a lifetime fitness program. More often than not, they put the program last, squeezing it into their free time. Of these people, there are only 26 % regularly participating in the fitness program, and even then it is only an average of three times per week.

Commitment to a lifetime of exercise is paramount, but sadly, far too many people often neglect it. People ignore the fact that their lives’ could be greatly enhanced.

Heart disease, stroke, injuries from accidents and mishaps, cancer, and chronic lower respiratory illnesses are common causes of deaths in the U.S., as you may be aware. The CDC reported these as the five most common causes of deaths each year.

What’s worse is that all these causes of death could be avoided all together. People should pay attention to the importance of fitness and exercise and reap the benefits of a lifetime commitment to being fit. Deaths occurring due to accidents are not included.

Physical exercise is not the only part making up a lifetime fitness program, but this program includes a diet that needs to be watched. Anyone that commits to physical fitness will defiantly live a longer healthier life. Of course, they will be happier overall as well. Life is more enjoyable and relaxing when you have a healthy mind and a healthy body.

The choice is yours—do you prefer to commit to a lifetime of fitness to live a healthy, pro-longed life, or would you rather suffer the consequences of not taking care of yourself?

Is There Such A Thing As Healthy Junk Food?

by By Mark Hyman, M.D.

Can junk food be healthy?

The food industry certainly wants you to think so!

That’s why they’re creating an increasing number of foods with health claims.

From vitamin-spiked Diet Coke, to whole-grain Pop Tarts, from misleading labels on Tyson chicken, to McDonald’s salads laden with high-fat salad dressing, marketing claims abound.

But are these foods actually good for us?

In Michael Pollan’s new book “In Defense of Food,” he argues against “nutritionism,” or removing nutrients from whole foods and putting them into processed food or taking them as supplements for their health benefits.

Don’t let these ploys fool you.

Be suspicious of any food that comes in a package, box, or a can. Most of these products just aren’t real food.

Let me tell you about one of my patients.

He’s a food scientist who invents new foods in the lab by mixing chemicals. I call them “Frankenfoods.”

But working with these chemicals all the time was making my patient sick. We tried hard to lessen his exposure to them.

One day, he brought me an industry journal called “Food Business News.” I found it shocking.

The publication was filled with marketing ploys to help the industry give their poor-quality foods the appearance of being healthy.

One ad was for Food Ingredient Solutions, a company that makes food dyes to color junk food with natural pigments.

Another was for Tyson Foods, which cleverly labels their chicken as “produced without antibiotics that impact antibiotic resistance in humans.” That means they did use antibiotics -- just not ones that cause problems in humans.

Another article focused on a company called Fitch Ratings, which said that innovation in the food industry will continue in areas of “perceived” health and wellness, convenience, and ethnic products.

That’s right.

It’s only “perceived” health and wellness -- not actual health and wellness.

That means that you just need to make people believe they are eating or drinking something healthy. Whether it is actually healthy doesn’t matter.

And there were also advertisements for whole-grain Lean Pockets, which are the same old processed pocket sandwiches with some flecks of fiber added to make you think you’re eating healthy food.

I also saw an ad for something called Vegi Pure, a cholesterol-lowering product that adds plant phytosterols to junk food.

As you can see, the food industry is doing all it can to convince you to choose its junk foods disguised as healthy foods.

Instead, take a cue from Michael Pollan. He says, “Eat food [meaning real, whole food]. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

So what should you eat?

Choose food that comes from a farm, not a lab – and then you won’t have to think about what all these claims mean.

You’ll be eating healthy food, naturally. Here is some more information about what to eat:

• Whole, real food such as vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, lean animal protein like small wild fish and poultry, and whole omega-3 eggs.

• Small amounts of grass-fed, antibiotic- and hormone-free beef or lamb.

So don’t believe food scientists’ attempts to make you believe you need special ingredients to stay in good health – Choose whole, real food instead!

Now that’s food for thought.
