Dear Fitness Friends,
Fall is here now and there is still plenty of time for fun and
activities to be had outdoors.
I have finally made the committment to modify the foods that I
am eating. I believe that in order to make a lifestyle change more
permanent, it is much better to make small modifications at a time.
My modifcation has been to omit refined carbs from my diet.
Of course, it isn't all or nothing. If you decide that there can
be exceptions to the rule, you won't be tempted to throw in the
towel the minute you eat something that you had decided not to
eat.
I am currently on vacation, but will continue to stick to my modified
eating. I won't be able to get to
the gym for about three weeks--so this should be interesting. I
will walk almost every day. Also when traveling, I'll choose a
hotel
with
an indoor
poor
and maybe even an exercise room.
In a perfect world, we would always eat perfectly and never miss
a day of activity. Since we don't live in a perfect world, we will
have to plan to do the best that we can each day.
To your health!

p.s. For those of you who will be handing out halloween
candy, why not choose a type of candy that you don't like--better
yet--why not
buy miniture boxes of raisins to give to the children, since they
will get plenty of candy from everyone else.

Putting An End To Fast Food & Snacks
In Your Diet
It hardly seems fair... it is so easy to gain weight and
so very difficult to get rid of it.
Eating is one of the true pleasures in life. It's a social
activity... it's a reason to gather with friends or family.
And you can't just completely refrain from food... your body
won't tolerate that maneuver and it's unhealthy to do so
anyway.
Life is tough enough and nobody wants to give up the few
pleasures in life that they truly enjoy; which is why so
many people head further and further down the path to obesity
without breaking the cycle.
Recent studies indicate that our body doesn't even respond
to dieting the way it was once thought. When you deprive
your body of food and nutrients, your body goes into a bit
of a self defense mode. Your body can't discern between the
lean times of a diet and being deprived.
Today your body is also up against a major onslaught of the
widespread use of fast foods, soft drinks, and snacks.
The make up of fast foods is such that merely one item off
of many of menus is the caloric equivalent of an entire meal
or more! And not only that, fast foods just leave your stomach
screaming for more because they are the meal that doesn't
fill you up. And to pile on even more... most people wash
the junk food down with a soda that is nothing more than
sugar flavored water. This is truly a vicious, unhealthy
eating cycle... that coupled with a inactive lifestyle leads
to massive storage piles of fat in your body.
Another threat to healthy eating habits are snacks. Snacks
contain way too many empty calories that ultimately end up
as fat.
Between meal snacks should involve you buying some fruit
to take with you... so when hunger strikes you have a healthy
alternative to a bag of chips. The important point to remember
here is that snacks equate to habits.
For the vast majority of people battling their weight, they
have trained their mind and body (habit)that they need a
'snack' between meals... your body doesn't... it is only
responding to it's training. The good news is that just as
habits can be developed they can be broken.
Again start by eating some fruit for your snacks and over
time I'll guarantee you'll lose the craving for those vending
machine treats.

Fitting Walking
Into Your Day
Walking is one of the best methods of exercise you can do. It requires no special equipment and has muscular and cardiovascular benefits. Walking on a regular basis should be part of every person's fitness routine. Best of all, walking can be fit in to a busy day very easily.
A common tip on fitting walking into your day is to park your car at the back of the parking lot when you shop or go to work. To take that idea one step farther, why not consider parking in an adjacent parking lot or walking from your home to the store or too your office? If you take public transportation or someone drops you off, consider getting off one stop early or having your companion drop you off several blocks away from your destination.
Another common suggestion is to take the stairs whenever possible. But some people have access to all the functions they require on one floor and don't find the need to use the stairs. If this is the case, consider regularly using a washroom on a different floor or using a copier that's across the building from your desk.
If you frequently go out to lunch, suggest to your colleagues that you find a good restaurant within walking distance. If time is an issue, speak with your supervisor about lengthening your lunch break in favor of working a few extra minutes at the end of the day.
Although many people think walking the dog is a good way to get in extra steps, the stop and go nature of walking your dog doesn't really provide many health benefits. However, many dogs appreciate a brisk walk once they have relieved themselves. Allow extra time for a few laps around the block at a brisk pace once Fido has completed his business.
Babies, also, enjoy being taken for walks. But unless your child is old enough to maintain a steady pace, consider pushing him in a stroller while you walk. An added benefit of this is that you will burn extra calories the stroller. You will also set a great example for your child that exercise is an important part of the day. Since you should be able to carry on a conversation while walking (if you can't, you're going too fast) make taking a walk after dinner a family tradition. You may be surprised what topics of discussion come up.
